Hello and welcome to my new blog, as you can tell my name’s David Collom.

I’ve been working in IT for some years now and felt that it was about time I began writing about some of the challenges, experiences and encounters along the way with tips, code snippets and reviews.

From a young age, I always had computers around me. starting when my mam (mother)brought back a BBC Basic home during the school summer holidays.

From their my passion for programming began, writing basic text based applications / calculates / Stories etc..

I started out my career in IT as a PHP Developer. Learning from friends code, I was quickly able to self teach myself the basics at the age of ~12.

This gave me enough knowledge and confidence to build and expand my knowledge and feed my passion to learn more.

Between 2007 and 2012 I was primarily PHP/MySQL, I was given the opportunity within a new role to learn Ruby and Ruby on Rails.

While learning Ruby, I was overwhelmed with the size of the Ruby Eco System, having a plugin for almost everything you’d wished for. Coming from software houses where OpenSource and 3rd Party libraries where discouraged, this was a dream come true!

This alone has been one of the major reasons for my liking to Ruby over PHP, the Syntax and the ease of Unit/Integration testing was the next!

Along with my programming background, I now tend to lead my programming away from Web/App Development and further towards System Automation Technologies (Docker, Mesos, Marathon, VMware etc..).

I hope this to be the first of many posts to come and hope to become more technical as it evolves.
